The first edition of the Christmas Fair in Sibiu took place in 2007, when Sibiu was the European Capital of Culture and was a pilot project, as the tradition of this type of event does not exist in the country. The first edition was set up by Dr. Barbara Schofnagel, Social Attaché of the Austrian Embassy in Bucharest, together with the City Hall of Sibiu. It started with 38 houses in Piata Mica and reached over 80 houses 10 years later, arranged in the Great Market. Since the first editions, the event has made a good name and became the only fair Christmas in Romania known abroad and attracting a growing number of tourists every year.
Each edition has brought novelties and success stories such as Santa's Workshop, visited each year by more than 3,000 children making reservations a month before the inauguration; Park of Santa Claus, a fun park for children at the center of which is a carousel built specifically for this event; the city-break event for events, which was a novelty in the field and enjoys a great success so that almost any hotel and hostel in the area offers a special package to visit the Sibiu Christmas Fair.
