Bucharest is the capital of Romania and, at the same time, the most populous city and the most important industrial and commercial center of the country. The population of 1,883,425 inhabitants (2011) makes Bucharest the 10th city as a population of the European Union. According to estimates by some specialists, Bucharest gathers over three million people a day, and over the next five years this number will exceed four million. To this is added that the localities around the city, which will be part of the future Metropolitan Area, sum up a population of approximately 430,000 inhabitants. The first mention of the locality appears in 1459. In 1862 it became the capital of the United Principalities. Since then it has undergone continuous changes, becoming the center of the artistic, cultural and Romanian media scene. Its elegant architecture and urban ambience brought Belle Époque the surname of "Little Paris". The city has experienced an economic and cultural boom.
